How To Repair A Lawn Mower Safety Cable

Since June of 1982, lawn mower safety regulations require all walk-behind mowers sold in the United States to have a handle-mounted bract brake.

This rubber feature is sometimes referred to as a zone control lever or a kill switch. When the mower's bale handle is depressed, the brake cable tightens and the mower can start. When the bale handle is released, the cablevision becomes loose and the engine and mower bract stop immediately.

When the brake cable is damaged or cleaved, the mower becomes temporarily inoperable. Locating the right replacement cable is possibly the well-nigh difficult function of replacing a broken blade brake cable.

Step 1: Utilise the mower'south model number and serial number to identify and buy the right replacement brake cable.

Step 2: Push button the bale handle forrard to create slack in the restriction cablevision and disassemble the Z end of the cable from the bale handle.

Pace 3: Follow the brake cable down the length of the mower handle and detach it from its mounting mechanisms. These often include several strategically located zip ties and a detachable mounting bracket of some sort.

Footstep 4: With the old cable complimentary from the mower handle, disassemble the end of the cable from the mower'south control lever located nearly the base of the engine.

Step five: Utilize a pair of needle-nose pliers to detach the cablevision from the mower's control subclass. Depress the plastic tabs on either side of the cablevision'southward locking mechanism and push the mechanism dorsum through the control bracket. Slide the cable away from the mower and recycle it if possible.

Pace 6: Install the new brake cablevision using the reverse procedure. Install the end of the cable into the control lever located near the base of the engine.

Step 7: Snap the plastic locking mechanism into the control bracket and feed the cablevision up the length of the handle. Avoid placing the cable near any hinged portions of the handle or other movable parts.

Step 8: Mount the brake cablevision to the mower handle using the advisable mounting brackets. Zip tie the cable securely into place to reduce future wear and tear on the cablevision.

Pace 9: Slip the Z end of the cablevision into the bale handle. Test the tension of the cable and adjust equally needed.
